RECREATIVO 3-2 Shepherds Tuesday 5.9.10

What a shit summer! England. Vuvuzelas. A World Cup final played out by past masters of Total Football, as if it was a war. The Jubulani. Messi. Drogba. Torres. Italy. Gallas coming to Tottenham! At least Andy Murray didn't win Wimbledon. And so here we go again, the kids going back to school, the darker days drawing in and another season in the Central Sunday Super League.
There was a slight spring in our step as we descended from all corners of Hackney back to the beautiful Marshes and it wasn't just the lush green pitches that we trod upon. Our summer recruitment drive, early training sessions in Clissold Park, had meant we had a very decent squad of players this time round, quite capable of being right up there this season. And to be honest, it's about time we had a serious crack at winning this league. First up, Shepherds Tuesday, a team we've had mixed fortunes against over the years.
Joe Haley put us 1-0 up with either a wonder goal (lobbed from not far off the half way line) or a long ball forward which the keeper fumbled and dropped over his line - which ever way you want to look at it. Either way, we were all made up for Joe who always puts in a decent shift in midfield. An equaliser just before half time would usually have seen our heads drop, but we got out there and played some of the best football we've played in this league. Connor and Benson were ripping up the opposition, Max and débutante Liam running like lightening onto their through balls. Brilliant stuff. Joe H poached another, Shepherds equalised again and finally Joe Dunthorne does what he always seems to do when he comes up from a corner, win the ball, cause panic in the oppo's box and smash the ball into the old onion bag. Get in!
Once again, 100% effort from all involved. Good to get off to a winning start against a decent side. Roll on the good times. Roll on the scuffed knees and aching legs. Roll on the away days to the darkest muddiest fields of South London. It's going to be a beautiful season for Recreativo Football Club. J.G.
