RECREATIVO 2-2 Rio Kaiserslautern 21.3.10

On the way to the meet in Clissold Park, one of the ugliest animals you could possibly imagine stops us dead in our tracks. A huge toad (the size of a cat) crawls into the road in front of us as we slam on the brakes, jump out of the car and although too scared to pick it up, try and save it before it gets squashed into the road. Traffic stops as we explain to the other road users that they have to swerve this unpleasant creature. We desperately look for a stick to push it out the road, but it wouldn't budge. The thought of actually lifting it up with bare hands doesn't bare thinking about. None of us would actually touch it! Gripping the tarmac with it's hands (do toads have hands? Definately not paws!), refusing to move despite the oncoming traffic peril, we decide to leave it and head for Regents Park. Toads. Frogs. Snakes. Komodo Dragons. Lizards. Eels. Horrible creatures.
At Regents Park, it feels like nature is on the move today, a huge heron swooping over our pitch like a Heinkel bomber silhouetted against the sun. Spring hangs heavy in the air as if about to burst out across the city. It feels good. Like the end of the season is upon us, which for us older gentlemen in the team is always welcomed. Summer is not far off, a chance to rest, play some local park football and not worry about league positions, a chance to regenerate and as always, a chance to 'get fit for next season' as some of us always say!
A good match today against last season's champions. Goals for Aaron and Connor were the highlights of the game, Nick tore something in the groin/buttock area (after the introduction of the new stick your bum out warm up routine) and it's now two games in a row without a punch up for Recreativo!
An excellent game on a gorgeous day in a beautiful part of this wonderful city. The only sour note of the day came on the way home when we decided to stop and check out the toad. It was as flat as a pancake. Back home, roast dinner, wine and chocolate washed away the guilt of leaving the poor creature in the road. Blackburn-Chelsea, Countryfile, Antiques Roadshow and then Dimbleby before falling asleep on the settee and bed.

Team: James Humphreys, John Megaughin (Mario Pisano), Nick Candy (Marcus du Sautoy), Jimmy Lloyd, Joe Dunthorne, Aaron Gayle, Joe Paul Scholes (Adam Bradbury), Joao Spinola, Jimmie Gregory (Tino), Max Bland, Connor Joseph.
