Jeff's Chippy 1-4 RECREATIVO 23.11.08

Half hour before the meet and the dreaded sound of sunday morning text messages begins. Dario's not coming. Alex is still in Reading. Everyone else wants to know if the game is actually still on as overnight, London is pierced by an icy dagger of freezing Atlantic wind-chill. It's snowing, turning to hard relentless and very cold rain. It's horrible and we have to get down to Clapham Common for a probable mud-fest against the current League Champions. Fingers crossed it's off....

Our old left back Matt, is spotted going off to get the sunday papers and says he plans a day in front of the radiator, drinking coffee and keeping warm. We pretend to him that we'd rather be out in the foreign surrounds of South London, sloshing about in freezing rain, flying the Recreativo banner and fighting the cause for the good people of Stoke Newington. The phone goes again; Daniel's out with us today, Joao is back from injury and Russell's back in the frame. All of a sudden the team is shaping up nicely, the sun is fighting it's way through the darkened heavens and we're making good time on our journey south. And then unfolded quite possibly one of Recreativo's finest games in our six years together. We had shape, we had a target man up front (Nick), an assured goalkeeper (Chris) who's confidence flowed up through our backline and into the rest of the team. We had two ball winners (Marcus and Russell) who added a steeley edge to our progressive play. And we had goals, goals, goals! It had taken a while to click back into the kind of form that saw Recreativo go on such an impressive run last season, but boy, we were flying today! Yes, the crossbar saved us a couple of times, aswell as Chippy's poor finishing (and their penalty skied eight yards over the bar), but today Recreativo earnt and deserved those precious three points, without doubt the best team on the park. Now is the time to build on this result and push up that table...Recreativo big up yer chests!
