Sandmere 7-3 RECREATIVO 19.10.08

"What's going wrong? What is it?", asks a bewildered Recreativan. "Fitness..", comes the reply as we greedily tuck into our king size Magnums, Chunky Kit-Kats, Chilli Heatwave Doritos and fizzy drinks on the way back home. We are squashed into the warm car and heading back to Stokey, the sugary post match rush of chocolate soothing the emptiness of our defeat like a big mummy blanket that will make everything feel alright. It sometimes feels like this is exactly why we come out on a sunday, the southbound drives across London, the anticipation, the banter, the chocalate. If we really let anything so trivial as the actual score of the game get in the way, we'd have given up years ago.

The build up all week had just been about getting 11 players out today, with families, work and Spurs playing in Stoke conspiring to whittle down our squad to nine. John and James stepped in to make their Recreativo debuts, aswell as Dario who had come to watch, but ended up playing the second half for us, saving our blushes by scoring two great goals to at least make the scoreline a little better than last week.

Bilal, once again, done a sterling job up front, hustling and tackling, taking players on and holding the ball up. If we can persuede Dario to make the long trek up to Hackney Marshes we may just have a superb future front line there.

We just weren't at the races today. Out of shape, disjointed and fragmented. As soon as we cleared the ball from our half we were charging back to face another Sandmere attack. Wave after wave. But hey, who really wants to read anything about the actual football in a football report? Another fine Reccy day out on an autumnal Wandsworth Common. Despite the result, a good laugh with a great bunch of mates. J.G.
